Talk Thursday Series: New Labour laws on maternity leave and resistant Nigerian organisations.

The minister of labour, Dr Chris Ngige yesterday declared to delegates in a meeting that employers were barred from laying off pregnant employees, and he also announced the increase in the number of months from two months as was obtained before to four months!.

Not excluding the violent effects that had stirred from private setups in the past, a lot of these establishments deny their pregnant employees the benefits of maternity leave or force these pregnant women to resign or reapply for her position after childbirth without any guarantee of getting that position again....

The scale of this initiative may clearly not be in a good place because of the burning discrimination on ground against married women at some establishments in this country.

In fairness to these pregnant employees married or single maternity leave helps these women to recover from the stress of labor and allows them to practice
exclusive breastfeeding. So is this law good music to these women?....

Looking at this issue also from a broader picture, from the angle of the employer, will this initiative also affect the business interest of the employer?......

What are your thoughts on this new law, do you think this initiative affect the employability of married women, if not what are your suggestions?....
